About New York City Residents Directory

New York City has no single current book of residents. Property information is kept by the Department of Finance, land documents follow borough-specific routes, courts use their own indexes, and historical households appear in archives and library collections. This independent reference organizes those public access paths so a name, street address, borough, or older address can be matched with the office or collection that is most likely to hold the relevant record.

Why This Reference Exists

New York City research crosses five distinct county identities: New York County in Manhattan, Kings County in Brooklyn, Bronx County, Queens County, and Richmond County on Staten Island. The Department of Finance Property Information Portal provides assessment context, while the Office of the City Register and ACRIS hold current land-record indexes for four boroughs. Staten Island land records remain with the Richmond County Clerk. Older households can appear instead in DORIS, NYPL, borough libraries, court files, and printed directories. We bring together the office names, search routes, coverage limits, and access rules that keep those systems from being mistaken for one citywide resident roll.

What the Directory Points To

Use the path that matches the record question, then verify any result with the office or collection that holds it.

  • Searches by purpose: the street directory for address-keyed records, the city directory for historical volumes, and the resident lookup for a one-person verification trail
  • Public custodians: the Department of Finance, City Register, Richmond County Clerk, county clerks, eCourts, the Board of Elections, and archival collections
  • Practical records paths: address-to-BBL research, deed and property trails, directory entries, and household research across changing borough names
  • Access boundaries: New York Freedom of Information Law procedures for agency records, Judiciary Law ยง255 for court files, and the limits that protect sealed or confidential information

Limits of This Reference

This is a privately operated reference, not a New York City office, a department of any of the five counties, a New York State agency, a court, or a library. The custodians, not this directory, control records and their availability. Important limits include:

  • We cannot confirm whether a particular person currently lives in New York City
  • We cannot pull, certify, or change any record on your behalf
  • We cannot add anyone to, or remove anyone from, any roll or database
  • We cannot give legal advice about a record or a dispute
  • We cannot ensure that every office schedule, portal, fee, or coverage date remains current

Only the record custodian can confirm, certify, or correct a record. This reference is not a consumer reporting agency, and its information may not be used for credit, employment, housing, insurance, or another FCRA-regulated decision.
